From start to finish – not a book to be put down … at all.
Korede and Ayoola are sisters living in Lagos, Nigeria. Although Korede is protective of the younger Ayoola, the favourite and beautiful one in the family, she is also jealous of her sister’s ease at attracting men. After each of Ayoola’s boyfriends die, it is Korede who helps her to cover up the crime … until Korede does something that might betray her sister.
“She hitches up her dress and pushes past me in a flurry of lace and a fog of Jimmy Choo L’Eau. She’s careful to catch me with the sharp point of her bony shoulder.”
”Neither of us says anything. I focus on slowing down my breathing. Without my permission, tears run down my face.”
”I hate house parties. People forget the etiquette they would apply if they visited your house on a normal day. They leave their paper plates on any and very surface, they spill drinks and walk away; they dip their hands in snack bowls, take some and put some back; they look for places to make out.”
~Quotes from the book
- The Guardian: “Sibling loyalty comes under pressure in a Lagos-set debut that mixes crime, love story and family saga.”
- Kirkus: “Even your most extravagant speculations about what’s really going on with these wildly contrasting yet oddly simpatico siblings will be trumped in this skillful, sardonic debut.”
- The Washington Post: “The title of Oyinkan Braithwaite’s debut novel, “My Sister, the Serial Killer,” is simultaneously accurate and misleading. The book is indeed about a serial killer and her sibling, but it is not at all the pulpy slasher story you might expect. Instead, it is a playful yet affecting examination of sibling rivalry, the legacy of abuse and the shallow sexism of Nigeria’s patriarchal society.”

Thanks for the recommendation. Am building up my supply of reading material for the forthcoming trip away. Kindle version only $2.99. Makes a lot of sense for travelling, but still love the feel and smell of books in my hands. Looking forward to this one…..sounds a bit different..

Yes, it’s different. Don’t expect the normal murder mystery. It’s more about the relationship between the two sisters. It’s an easy short read for the plane. I hope you like it too.
