Well-written, but no spark for me.
Inspired by the life of Peggy Guggenheim, and her daughter, Pegeen, this book tells of fictional Leonora Calaway, wealthy heiress and art collector who, in 1937, gathers together a group of modern artists and their art collections. Hitler has identified modern artists as “degenerates”, so Leonora is resolved to save them and their art by living out the war in Mexico.
“If I have learned one thing about being a woman, it’s that men will change your mind.”
“I’m not convinced that Hetty has ever written a single word of her great novel. But she certainly speaks a lot about the things that are keeping her from writing it.”
“My room is the most gorgeous place at night, even better than the stables because there aren’t so many flies. You look out and except for the moon and whatever’s reflecting in the ocean, it’s dark as dark can be.
~ Quotes from the book
- Kirkus: “A lush chronicle of wealth, art, adventure, loneliness, love, and folly told by a narrator you won’t be able to forget.”
- Publishers Weekly: “This is a fascinating, lively, and exquisitely crafted novel.”
