Benjamin and Helen Trask are a well-known couple in 1920’s New York. Their enormous wealth has grown through the 1920’s and through the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The author has given different versions of their story, creating a mystery for the reader – which version is true?

“My job is about being right. Always. If I’m ever wrong, I must make use of all my means and resources to bend and align reality according to my mistake so that it ceases to be a mistake.”

Just like Guardian, I was “propelled forward by the twists and turns of the novel’s form, the conviction that Diaz has another trick up his sleeve.”, and the Booker Prize judges call it a “provocative and propulsive novel”.

Quotes:

“A certain amount of time is allotted to each of us. How much, only God knows. We cannot invest it. we cannot hope for a return of any kind. All we can do is spend it, second by second, decade by decade, until it runs out.”

“Today’s gentleman is yesterday’s upstart.”
